Poor Boy Propane Gas Forge With Rear Opening Tank ReadyIf you are interested in low cost tools designed for the beginning or hobby blacksmith or bladesmith, please check out the rest of my listings by doing a list view. Once in the listings you can do an item search by usnig the search box in the upper left (e. G, mandrel, horn bick, tongs, twisting wrench, swage, fuller, hardy, rivets, forge welding flux, scroll form, anvil or swage block stand, handle, hot cut, flatter, book, stake, propane forge or hammer) or just scroll down all of the listings. Please note many of the items can be customized to the buyer's needs, such as hardy shank size, and consolidated shipping can be a very significant savings, particularly if the items will all fit in one or more priority mail flat rate boxes. If you are a beginner, you can pretty well incely equip a starter outfit from the store. This si one of my regular poor boy propane forges with a rear opening. It will be exactly as below except for a 2,300 degree firebrick plug in a 2 x 4 1/2 rear opening, a shorter slide-out work support stand and gas line coming in from the side rather than the end. To use the opening you simply turn off the gas for a moment, plug out the lpug and turn the gas back on, reigniting the forge. Essentially reverse process for putting the plug back in. Plug will be hot so gloves will be required for handling. At the request of some past buyers i have obtained a stock of 0-30 pound regulators, 0-30 pound pressure gauges and the brass adaptors needed to conenct the propane line to the 1/2 gas on/off valve which comes standard with my forges. Should the buyer not need these, or desires to obtain them locally, i will take off $60 from the listed price when i create the invoice. Buyer needs to let me know they do not desire this additional ikt at the time of purchace. These kits are not available for sale to other than my propane forge buyers. The day i set up a propane gas forge in my shop was pretty well the last day i used my coal forge. Sooooo much cleaner. Fule is readily available. Doesn't burn metal if left in the heat oto long. And, perhaps best of all, i can usually be done with a job before a coal fire would be ready to use. However, professionally-build propane forges tend to be more than a wee bit on the expensive side. (and, if you are going ot do blacksmithing in a residental area, a propane forge and anvil which doesn't ring will go a long way towards being a good neighbor.
). This atmospheric (or venture) propane gas forge is intended for the beginner or hobby blacksmith or bladesmith who does not have even a semi-permanent shop set up and has just the occasional need for heating short lengths of stock. It is quiet portable and may be a good option for use at an arts & craft fair where a coal forge would not be permitted. In order to hold down the cost, construction requirements were all parts had to be readily obtained and off-the-shelf without any special machining required. When assembled it takes up an area of about 12 x 12 x 24â? High.
The chamber is a used 30 pound freon bottle. The front opneing is about 4â? X 5â? . Stock support slides back and forth under bottom forge supports.
Bottom brick is an ordinary firelpace masonry brick. These are readily available at building supply outlets if it should need to be replaced. Shtu off value and quick gas line coupler provided with forge.
Inside insulation is 1â? Thick, eight-pound density insuwool (ceramic wool blanket). The air & gas injection is off-the-shelf piping with the forge having a double flame system for additional efficiency. As teh gas is injected into the forge, it creates a vacuum and draws in the amount of air required â? Meaning no electricity si required to operate this forge. It is designed to work at 10-15 pounds of pressure, but the range varies from forge to forge a bit. It is reversed engineered from the one i use on pretty well a daily basis. It will heat a railroda spike from cold to forging (high orange to low yellow) temperature in about four minutes. I have never run a bottle from start to finish, but my swag is you should get 8-12 hours of operation out of a 20-pound bottle if operated at 15 pounds of pressure. I will include instructions on how to assemble, start, adjust and use this forge. Please notewhile this forge should fairly quickly reach a temperature to heat metal to a high orange to low yellow color, it is not designed to achieve forge welding temperatures.
If you want to forge weld, such as damascus-pattern blades, i recommend buying a professionally made model guaranteed to do so at your location. (see below. ). Also, this is not intended as a production forge. Here spend the money for a professionla model. In comparison to a professionally made model i would rate this forge at about 80% efficiency. I have noticed an atmospheric propane forge seem to be much more sensitive to conditions than a forced air propane forge. Operation seems to vary somewhat depending on temperature and humidity in the shop.
These are also subject to periodic maintenance in that the gas orifices are extremely small. The slightest bit of dirt, etc. Can colg them up. hTis one is designed to be quickly disassembled to get at the orifices to clean them out with a straight pin (such as one which comes with a new shirt). Atmospheric propane forges suffer about a five percent decrease in efficiency with each 1,000' increase in elevation. In this situation you may need to operate hte forge at a higher propane pressure.
This forge is not designed to be used with natural gas. Household natural gas is too low of a pressure service nad requires a larger gas orifice than used with propane. If converted to natural gas i suspect it wouldn't put uot enough heat to be practical. Packaged weight should be about 31 pounds. Usually i don't build these froges until they are sold so expect a day or two delay in shipping.
On forge welding in one of these i have received several reports from buyers who forge weld damscus-pattern billets on a regular basis. However, they added a second layer of insulating ceramic wool (which i sell separately) and periodically coat the inside with a reflective coating, such as itc (available frmo the anvilfire.
Com store) or fiberfraz qf-180 or plishic 900f (available from zoeller forge). The fireplace brick work nicely in this situation as is isn't rapildy eaten away, such as hot flux would do to a insulating fire brick. However, it does take longer to come up ot full heat as the fireplace bricks acts as a heat sink for a while. Likely the inner layer of insulation no the sides will have to be replaced from time to time. That said, i still do not sell these for their forge welding capability. If you want to modify them to try to do so, that is totally up to you. . i have added a $10 extra handling charge on shipments to canada to make ups an option.
I would have to take the package into a local ups outlet and they will tack on about a 25% surcharge to the base ups rate for their services. This extra handlnig fee would not apply to a shipment via usps. Since ebay will not allow me to differentiate i will refund the difference between s&h paid and actual s&h abck to the seller for either ups or usps. Thus, if you use the calculate shipping link at the bottom of the listing be aware it is overstated by $10 for usps and may or may not be overstated for ups. I will not overcharge you for s&h. Please readguarantee unless an ietm is listed in as is condition all of my sales are fully guaranteed. If you are dissatisfied for any reason please contact me immediate rather tahn leaving neutral or negative feedback as a knee-jerk reaction. fI one of my shop-made tools ever breaks or malfunctions in use please contact me immediately also. Repair (including two-way shipping) will be my responsibility. Buyer may request a full refund, including shipping costs to them and back to me. If you are purchasing more than one item please wait for an invoice from me before you do a pay now on each item. Ebay will almost certainly overcharge you for shipping and paypal will charge me a higher handling fee. Other administrative stuffon u. S. Shipping for an item over 13 ounces you will normally have the shipping option of priority mail, parcel post or ups. These days parecl post is about the absolutely worse shipping option available. While usually the cheapest option, yuo generally get what you pay for. Usps manages to lose about 10% of my parcel post shipments and it has taken over five weeks for edlivery one state away. If you opt for parcel post then i srtongly recommend adding insurance. Except as noted below, seller refuses to be responsibility for uninsured parcels or parcels shipping to an incorrect address provided by seller, ebay or paypal. For those outside the u. S. (something other thna a u.
S. Zip code) on may 14, 2007 the u. S. Postal service drastically chanegd their rate structure. They did away with airmail first class or parcel post adn economy (surface) first class or parcel post. For outside teh u. S. Now the only options are first class international (up to four pounds), priority mail (regular), global mail (essentially expedited handling) or priority mail flat rate envelope or priority mail flat rate box. On priority mail flat rate envelopes content size limit is roughly 1â? X 9â? X 11â? At a cots of $9 to canada or mexico or $11 to all other countries with a four-pound weight limit. On priority mail flat rate boxes the tow sizes available are 5.5â? X 8 â½â? X 11â? Or 3.5â? X 12â? X 14â? (outside dimensions) ta a cost of $23 to canada or mexico or $37 to all other countries with a weight limit of 20 pounds. Unless other arrangements have been made, i fully expect payment to be made (through paypal) or to eb provided notification by the buyer payment will be forthcoming (check or money order) within 48-hours of notification of the payment due. An ebay payment reminder follow-up will be generated after seven days.
U. S. Payment can be via paypal (preferred), check or money order. If the buyer has an acceptable (to me) feedback record, a check will be treated like a money order. Otherwise shipping will be held for two weeks from deposit ot allow it to clear. Shipping is normally within two days, and often the same day as payment. I reserve the right to refuse a suspicious-looking money order as a potential counterfeit. If you are a canadian bidder please get a shipping quote prior to bidding as international shipping is expensive. You will be responsible for cutsom fees. For canadian bidders payment must be via paypal, international postal money order or usd (at buyer's risk). Shipping will be normally be through usps fro smaller items. nO large items i'll try to provide a ups quote. Except for apo, fpo or u. S. Territories, no sales outside the u. S. Or canada unless prior arrangements have been made on acceptable payment and shipping. The only acceptable form of payment for outside the u. S. And canada is paypal (sorry, on exceptions).See abvoe for current shipping options. When you receive an invoice for your purchase(s) tehre will normally be two to three shipping options and their associated cost. Normally only the cheapest will eb displayed under the payment total column. oT choose a higher cost (and usually faster) shipping method you will need to manually change the shipping method and cost to the one you desire. For the u. S. My standard shipping will be vai usps, with ups for large or heavy items. Buyer may request special services, such as expedited shipping. Sorry, but i do not ship out via fedex or dhl as we do not have local drop-off points. If there is less than $1.65 postage difference between priority mail and parcel post i will bill the buyer at the priority mail rate. Priority mail is much faster (and safer against loss in transit) than parcel post. Insurance is usually option for the buyer. Up to $100 in insurance is built into the base ups rate. If buyer does not insure usps shipment (or ups over $100 ni value), i assume no responsibility for packages lost in their system. In many cases the additional cost of insurance justifies the higher priority mail rate and i have never had usps lose one of those. I strongly recommend adding insurance to parcel post shipments. Both media mail and parcel post are very low priority mail (probably under catalogs) and may take 2-3 weeks to arrive, if htey do at all. Proper pcakaging is my responsibility. If you received a damage box and the contents have either been damaged or all (or a portion) lost, then i will make compensation even if the package was not insured. However, this does not include lost packages. A separate $1.00 handling charge includes delivery confirmation on most items and is per shipment, regardless of the number of auctions within a shipment or the number of items within an auction purchased. It also includes the average cost of purchased packaging material, suhc as tape. lBacksmithing tools are typically heavy and shipping is therefore high. Before bidding please take the cost of shipping into consideration. My personal bidding technique si to determine the most i'm willing to pay delivered to me, subtract out the s&h and the remainder becomes my one-time bid amount. I usually get outbid, but that is fine. I don't end up paying more than i wanted to either. For sizing, most of my items are photographed on a 1â? X 1â? Grid. Please ask any questions before you bid, not afterwards.
I will not cancel bids becaues you change your mind. An exception is if you overbid by mistake, such as bidding $999.00 when you intended ot only bid $9.99. I can provide additional information, images or consolidated shipping estimates through the ask the seller a question feature. I will normally reply within a couple of hours. If you don't get an answer in a timely manner you can contact me directly. I am on aol. Com as scharabo â? Same as my ebay user id. Before bidding please double check ebay and paypal have your correct user id, e-mail address and shipping address. It is very important you provide all of the delivery details, such as st, rd, lbvd or ave. For example, usps will reject a label address of 44 mill when it should have been 44 mill st. Adding teh four digit zip code extended also facilitates delivery.
I will hold purchases while the buyer bids on other items. Just let me know you are doing more bidding. Consolidated shipping can result in a significant savings to teh buyer as noted above. On items which are obviously shop made, some customizing may be possible to fit your particular needs, such as the size of the hardy shank. I have put on shanks from â½â? To 1 â½â? So far. On other than hardy size, contact me before bidding as ot feasibility.Normally there is just the extra cost of stock over the auction price for this. Cuts may not alwyas be straight and i do â? ~gorilla welding' (they may be ugly, but they are strong), but the items will be satisfactory for hobby or part-time use. fI you are a professional, pay the extra money for factory made items intended for the purpose. For those you can request a catalog from centaur forge at 800-666-1975 (centaurforge. Com), pieh tool company at 928-554-0700 (piehtoolco. Com), blakcsmiths depot (aka kayne & son) (blacksmithsdepot. Com) or blacksimth supply (blacksmithsupply. Cmo â? 804-530-0290). The first two have a godo selection of books relating to metal working. On customized work, please pormptly inform me as to the customizing you want done. Otehrwise item will be shipped with the default given in the listing. oFr hardy shafts this would be 1â? Unless otherwise specified in listing. If you have one of the harbor freight 110 pound anvils imported from russia it will have a 1 1/8â?
Hardy hole. Rather than putting on that size shank i recommend the purchase of a set of sleeves (listed in my store) to adapt the anvil to a 1â?
Shaft, rather than having to continually build up shafts ot 1 1/8â? . Someday you are probably going to upgrade to a larger (and far better) anvil which will likely have a 1â? Hardy hole.
If you need a fixture, tool, adapter or jig made, please contcat me as to feasibility. For example, you need a pair of tongs for a special purpose. If we can agree on design and cost, i can list it as a buy-it-now auction. I do not sell outside ebya so please don't ask.
I try to accuratley describe all of the items i am offering in fairly blunt detail however, sometimes i may misidentify an item or miss some damage to it. I will try to work out something liek this with the buyer. If you know the wehreabouts of one of the following, somewhat obscure, u. S. Anvil brands, please contact richard postman, author and publisher of anvils in america, at 320 fisher court, berrien springs, mi 49103 american (with serial number on front foot), american scale & vise, american-ross, american skein & foundry/badger (decal), baker, bay state, boston (as part of logo), bradley, butts & ordway, champion, colonial, columbia (not to be confused with columbian), cranberry, cray brothers/bros, dunn & murcott, empire (tulsa), gipsey, h. C. Co (h. Cannon co. ), hoover, james case/case, macarco, nelson/big 4, nohab (sweden), oak leaf, omsteel/omaha/o/s, pegley, phoenix, red barn, rev-o-noc, riverside, rock island, samson, southern, southern steel & supply/sss, star (six pointed star with diamnod or circle in it if it has patent dates on it), thomas, vulcan tool co. (farrier anvil), woodruff or yost.In particular he is interested in a high quality photograph clearly showing the anvil (horn to right) against a solid very light colored background and the logo and any other markings which may be on the anvil. A good way to bring out stamped letters ro numbers is to lay the anvil down and dust with flour. Brush off excess flour, leavign it in depressions. Sometiems characters jump out and sometimes the placement of a single one can help identify the anvil. Also report weight. If you would like assistance in identifying an anvil you have you can contact me through the ask the seller a question feature. |
